BLUE AWARD: Student Competition for Sustainable Architecture and Engineering with Special prize for timber technology and the use of timber in sustainable student projects

Dear colleagues,
dear friends of WCTE 2016
 (World Conference of Timber Engineering),

from its very beginning, the biennial WCTE series has been making special efforts regarding participation and motivation of the future generations of engineers and architects.

In the framework of the 2016 WCTE edition in Vienna, we are continuing this tradition by supporting young researchers with scholarships and by joining our efforts with an existing biennial international student competition: THE BLUE AWARD.

In 2016, the Blue Award will be organized for the fourth time by the Institute of Architecture and Design of Vienna University of Technology. The Blue Award had been initiated by Francoise Helene Jourda and her successor at the Department for Spatial and Sustainable Design, Prof. Ernst Beneder now took over to organize the event.

This year, an International Jury under the presidency of Kazuyo Sejima (Japanese Architect and Prizker Price winner) recognizes and awards prizes to student projects which had been elaborated in the framework of academic design programs that deal with the topic of sustainability in architecture, urbanism and regional planning as well as in civil engineering.

A special prize for timber technology or the use of timber in design projects will be awarded. Selected projects and the award winners will be presented in a special exhibition during the WCTE 2016 in August. The official awards ceremony of the Blue Award will be held during the banquet of WCTE 2016.

The week after the WCTE 2016, a special workshop for the awarded participants with the contribution of leading Austrian timber architects (Prof. Beneder and Much Untertrifaller ) will be organized by the Institute for structural design of TU Vienna.

We would be pleased if you could distribute the Call for Applications to students who had been working in the last years (starting from summer term 2014) on timber based architectural or engineering projects as well as to Professors and other teachers who are leading design projects in this field.

Further information and details on the Blue Award can be found at www.blueaward.at. The deadline for submission of projects is May 10, 2016.

We are looking forward to receiving many interesting applications and to welcome the awardees at WCTE 2016.

Best regards,
